The Queen St High Tea.

An unhurried afternoon of three tiers, premium tea and a glass of prosecco — served beneath high ceilings in a beautifully restored heritage room in the heart of Berry, NSW.

The Ritual

So, what is a high tea?

A high tea is an afternoon spent slowly — a tiered stand of small, considered plates working their way from savoury to sweet, paired with pots of premium tea and, if you like, something sparkling. It is less a meal than an occasion: an excuse to sit, to talk, and to be looked after.

The name is a lovely misunderstanding. “High” never meant fancy — it referred to the tall dining table where the food was served. Here in Berry — an easy drive from the Southern Highlands and the NSW South Coast — we lean into the fancy anyway. Scroll on to see how the stand comes together, tier by tier.

Savouries & finger sandwiches

The foundation of the afternoon — warm, generous and just substantial enough. This is where a high tea earns its keep.

Tier Two · Middle

Scones, jam & dessert cream

The heart of the ritual. Traditional gem scones, still faintly warm, with strawberry jam and dessert cream — assembled to your own quiet debate over order.

Sweets, macarons & petit fours

The crescendo. Fresh macarons, petit fours and pastries — small, bright and made to be lingered over with a last pot of tea.
